Choosing the right home care services for your family can be a trying process. We posted part one last week where we discussed focusing on an assessment of needs, types of home care services, credentials and licensing, and experience and reputation. We will now discuss focusing on factors including customized care plans, quality of caregivers, client reviews and testimonials, and communication and coordination.

Customized care plans are a special factor to ask about when choosing a home care service. Customized care plans are tailored to the individual client’s needs and preferences of the client and their family. This is especially important as home care services should not be treated as a one-size-fits-all service. It is important that care is personalized and customized throughout the entire process.

Quality of caregivers is an important aspect of focus as well. It is important to evaluate the qualifications, training, and background checks of caregivers employed by the agency. This ensures that the caregivers are competent, compassionate, and trustworthy. Feel free to openly ask the agency about how caregivers are chosen for the agency as well as the special training and qualifications that will be included for your loved one’s potential caregiver. It is also important to ask the agency about the consistency of having one caregiver and what happens when/if the primary caregiver is unable to show up.

Client reviews and testimonials are an important factor to focus on when choosing a home care agency. It is important to research client reviews and testimonials to gain insights into the experiences of other families who have used the home care service. An agency without reviews or testimonials may be a newer agency or may not be highly chosen by others.

Lastly, communication and coordination are key when choosing a home care agency. It is important that effective communication and coordination are experienced from the beginning of the process – with the initial call to the agency. Find out the people involved within the process who you can communicate with and how promptly they respond. It is also important to assess continuity of care and address any concerns or changes in the care plan, promptly.
